James Tolksdor was born in Dortmund and studied at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Frankfurt and The Juilliard School in New York. In addition to engagements at Landestheater Detmold (2011–2015) and Theater Hof (2016–2020), Tolksdor has performed in the Philharmonie Berlin, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and Philharmonie Essen in roles such as Rigoletto, the Dutchman (The Flying Dutchman), Jochanaan (Salome), Iago (Othello), and Il Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore).
