Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim
About Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim
Founded in 1950 by Hindemith student Friedrich Tilegant, the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim quickly gained international recognition. Maurice André, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Frans Brüggen, Yehudi Menuhin, Nigel Kennedy, Mischa Maisky, Cyprien Katsaris, Christian Tetzlaff, and Lars Vogt are just a few of the renowned soloists with whom the orchestra has worked. In addition to Tilegant, the orchestra’s principal conductors have included Paul Angerer, Vladislav Czarnecki, Sebastian Tewinkel, and Timo Handschuh.
Douglas Bostock has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Director since 2019/20. The orchestra is known for its fresh and gripping approach to a wide-ranging repertoire from early to contemporary music. The Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim is made up of fourteen musicians from seven nations and is one of the very few full-time chamber orchestras in Europe. This allows for an extraordinarily homogenous yet flexible sound, which is also retained in larger works including winds and other string players from a permanent group of trusted musicians.
