About Ensemble Aventure

The Ensemble Aventure, founded at the beginning of 1986, is one of the oldest and most prominent ensembles for contemporary music in Europe. With its renowned concert series in Freiburg, its intensive connections to composers all over the world, its numerous work commissions, hundreds of premieres, international performances, more than 20 CDs and numerous publications on the sub- ject of the transmission and reception of new music, Aventure has played an important forming role in the contemporary music scene and presented new music to a wide audience. The ensemble consists of twelve musicians that play in various combinations from solo to tutti.

The founding intention and underlying philosophy of Ensemble Aventure is to connect the Avantgarde with the tradition from which it derives, to put seemingly well-known aspects into a different light, to rediscover forgotten or repressed works, to promote radically new ideas and to combine these elements in programmes that transcend époques and cultures.

The ensemble’s repertoire extends from the “Zweite Wiener Schule” and the American Avantgarde through Dada, Fluxus, concept art, critical composing and the Avantgarde that has its origins in Darmstadt, to the many works that have been written by young composers especially for Aventure. The ensemble puts special emphasis on the works of politically persecuted and ostracized com- posers, in whose rediscovery Aventure has played a significant part, and also on the dialogue with non-European musicspheres, above all with the new music of Latin America, a dialogue that has been motivation for guest appearances in Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador.

The International Elisabeth Schneider Composition Competition, initiated by Aventure three times between 2001 and 2005, the Festival Freiburger Frühling, founded in 2005 with its open workshop character, as well as educational cooperation in schools, music schools and universities are indication of the ensemble’s outstanding artistic and pedagogical focus, underlined by the many publications on the subject of new music.

Prizes from the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, the Europäische Wirtschaft and the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik as well as financial assistance for special projects from the Innovationsfonds Baden-Württemberg and the Netzwerk Neue Musik Baden-Württemberg are evidence of the ensemble’s high artistic quality and the multifaceted radius of activity. Aventure is financed by the City of Freiburg and the Land Baden-Württemberg / Regierungspräsidium Freiburg and through a generous act of sponsoring, has its rehearsal and concert location in the arched cellar of the Elisabeth Schneider Stiftung.
