About Gabriele May

The mezzo-soprano Gabriele May studied in her hometown of Saarbrücken. While still a student, she was invited by Siegried Matthus to join the Rheinsberg Chamber Opera, where in 1997 she sang the role of the fisherman’s wife in E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Undine. After completing her studies in 1999, she was for one year a member of the opera studio in Strasburg. Since 2001, she has been a guest in the opera houses of Saarbrücken, Lisbon, Frankfurt, and Meiningen, where in 2003 she made her debut as Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, a role she also performed in the Mannheim National Theater in 2004. In 2003, May was a finalist in the International Wagner Competition in Bayreuth, where her performances of Kundry and Fricka were especially praised. The broad range of her musical abilities is documented by numerous concerts and recitals, as well as collaborations with Ensemble Modern and the Berlin Contemporary Opera.
