Joscho Stephan on Rick Beato’s YouTube Channel

Guitarist Joscho Stephan plays a gypsy jazz guitar while YouTuber Rick Beato listens attentively. Several Marshall amplifiers are visible in the background. The bold text reads: “TWO FINGER SHRED?”.

Schott guitarist Joscho Stephan, one of the world’s leading Gypsy Jazz performers, recently appeared on the YouTube channel of Rick Beato, the renowned American music educator and content creator. In their wide-ranging conversation, Stephan amazed viewers with his breathtaking technique, deep musical understanding, and heartfelt passion for the Django Reinhardt tradition.

Together, the two guitarists dive into the world of Gypsy Jazz: from improvisational approaches and rest-stroke picking to the unique demands of Reinhardt’s original technique – shaped by his childhood injury. Stephan shares personal anecdotes about discovering Django’s music, learning by ear, and ultimately developing a voice of his own within the genre.

In addition to fascinating insights into gear, tone production, and right-hand technique, Stephan emphasizes a core artistic message: “I never wanted to be a copy – it’s about telling your own story using the language of the style.”

The interview ends with a set of captivating live performances, including the classic Jungle’s Tiger and Stephan’s original tribute Ballade pour Django, performed alongside rhythm guitarist Sven Jungbeck.
