The Complete Musician: Ryan Wigglesworth as Aldeburgh Festival’s 2026 Featured Artist
- 2 Jun 2026
There is a distinct magic to Snape Maltings in June. The Suffolk reed beds shimmer, the North Sea breeze carries a quiet creative energy, and the legacy of Benjamin Britten feels entirely alive. But this June, the 77th Aldeburgh Festival carries an even deeper resonance. Marking 50 years since Britten’s passing, the festival is honouring its founder’s vision of the "complete musician”, and they have found the perfect modern embodiment in Ryan Wigglesworth.
Announced as the 2026 Aldeburgh Festival Featured Artist, Wigglesworth is taking over the Suffolk coast to showcase the full, staggering scope of his career. Whether you know him as a visionary conductor, a fiercely inventive contemporary composer, or an intimate chamber pianist, his residency this year is a masterclass in musical versatility.
Here is a look at how Ryan Wigglesworth is shaping the 2026 Aldeburgh Festival programme across his dual careers.
The Conductor
Wigglesworth’s residency kicks off with what is undoubtedly the operatic centrepiece of the Snape summer: a semi-staged production of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.
Teaming up with acclaimed actor Rory Kinnear, Wigglesworth will conduct this dark fairytale of a love triangle in the iconic Snape Maltings Concert Hall. Leading a powerhouse cast that includes Sophie Bevan, Jacques Imbrailo and Dame Sarah Connolly, Wigglesworth’s intricate, deeply nuanced style is perfectly suited to unlock the elusive beauty of Debussy's only completed opera.
He will also be leading the two powerhouse ensembles most closely associated with his career:
-
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: Wigglesworth will conduct a rich symphonic programme balancing French impressionism with contemporary flair, featuring Ravel’s jazz-infused Piano Concerto in G alongside world-class pianist Steven Osborne.
-
The Knussen Chamber Orchestra: An ensemble rooted in the sharpest edges of contemporary classical music, continuing the legacy of Wigglesworth's mentor, Oliver Knussen.
The Composer
While his conducting brings existing masterpieces to life, Wigglesworth’s work as a contemporary classical composer ensures that the Aldeburgh Festival remains a living, breathing laboratory for new music.
As part of Aldeburgh’s commitment to new commissions, the festival is featuring several of Wigglesworth’s works. Audiences will get to experience his spectacular Piano Concerto (performed by Steven Osborne), which brilliantly bridges historical depth with modern vitality. Wigglesworth will also premiere a highly anticipated new work for viola virtuoso Lawrence Power and the Knussen Chamber Orchestra.
For an intimate look at his compositional voice, do not miss his vocal cycle Till Dawning. Performed in the Britten Studio with soprano Sophie Bevan and Wigglesworth himself at the piano, the piece sets the spiritual poetry of George Herbert into a moving meditation on faith, sorrow and acceptance.
The Next Generation
Britten and Peter Pears always intended Aldeburgh to be a place where established masters passed the torch to emerging talent. In 2026, Wigglesworth is stepping directly into that mentorship role.
Alongside his performances, Wigglesworth has been appointed as the Artistic Director of a new Summer Academy at Snape and Associate Director of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme. Throughout the festival, alumni and emerging artists will perform alongside him, embedding the next generation of classical music pioneers into the festival’s bones.
"Making music at Snape Maltings over the past 25 years has been one of the great pleasures of my life," Wigglesworth recently shared. "From the start, it felt like home... The role of Featured Artist allows me the rare opportunity to wear all my hats under one roof."
Why You Can’t Miss Aldeburgh 2026
The 2026 Aldeburgh Festival (running from 12 – 28 June) is a landmark event. Between celebrating Benjamin Britten’s enduring legacy and witnessing Ryan Wigglesworth at the peak of his powers as a conductor, composer, and pianist, it promises to be an unforgettable summer of live music.
