The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Cottbus State Theater looks back on more than 100 years of history as an opera and concert institution. Evan Christ, who has been the General Music Director since 2008, has led the ensemble to a consistently high standard in a repertoire with a broad spectrum. The orchestra’s concerts occupy a central position in its activities, with programs ranging from the standard repertoire to music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Guest soloists have included outstanding artists such as Sabine Meyer, Tzimon Barto, Viviane Hagner, and the Arditti Quartet. In the project "Eight Premieres in Eight Concerts", works by Valerio Sannicandro, Nina Šenk, and Salvatore Sciarrino, among others, were heard. In 2013, the "Cottbus SoundLab" began a continuing experimental workshop. The German Music Publishers Association has honored this courageous and significant program concept, where contemporary music holds an important position, as well as the orchestra’s commitment to education and outreach in a project which introduces children and young people to music.
