About John Eckhardt

From silence to sound system, from the lowest end of the spectrum into the ether, from Stone Age to tomorrow: John Eckhardt dedicates his life to bass. A passionate exploration of contrasting sound worlds that appreciates variety and personal experience. Two de cades in diverse musical environments allow him to explore secret spaces between Dub and Xenakis, kick drum and opera pizzicato – between hearing as culture and the ear as a primal sense of orientation. John Eckhardt’s projects share a contemplative, spatial and organic sound, and are produced in mo des transcending dichotomies such as composition/improvisation or tradition/experiment. John Eckhardt is a versatile chamber musician and improviser. His work both as a double bass soloist and ensemble musician (with Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, musikFabrik NRW, Elliott Sharp, Evan Parker, among others) continues to lead him to international venues and festivals. His solo CD “Xylobiont”and his recordings of various kinds of contemporary music such as Xenakis’ seminal masterpiece “Theraps”found worldwide recognition. In addition, he is involved in a number of club music, drone and multimedia projects as a bass guitarist and composer. John lives within earshot of the Hamburg harbor.
