Work of the Week – Tobias Picker: Fantastic Mr. Fox

A stylized fox in an orange suit, glasses, and tie stands in front of an orange background. On the right, composer Tobias Picker appears semi-transparently in the background.

On June 6, 2025, Opera Omaha premieres the chamber version of Fantastic Mr. Fox by Tobias Picker – a delightful opera for the whole family, performed outdoors in the Lauritzen Gardens. The production is by director Alison Moritz, with Gil Rose as musical director. Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book, the opera retells the clever fox’s adventures with colorful music and a heartfelt message: courage, community, and cleverness.

From storybook to stage

The opera was originally premiered in 1998 by the Los Angeles Opera and has since evolved into various adaptations. The chamber version of Fantastic Mr. Fox now performed in Omaha focuses on the heart of the story, features fresh arrangements, and offers a new take on staging – especially fitting in an open-air garden full of natural inspiration.

A fox defies injustice

Mr. Fox is a cunning provider who steals from greedy farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean to feed his family. When the farmers strike back, Mr. Fox joins forces with his fellow animals to outwit their traps. Together, they pull off a daring rescue – full of music, humor, and rebellious spirit.
