About Ulf Schirmer

Ulf Schirmer, Artistic and Musical Director of the Leipzig Opera and Artistic
Director of the Munich Radio Orchestra, was born in 1959 in Eschenhausen near
Bremen. He studied at the Bremen Conservatory and at the Hochschule for
Music in Hamburg with György Ligeti, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Horst Stein.
Schirmer was an assistant to Lorin Maazel and a house conductor at the Vienna
State Opera. From 1988 to 1991, he was General Music Director in Wiesbaden
and Artistic Director of the Hessian State Theater. Schirmer was Principal
Conductor of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen from 1988
to 1998. Since 2000, he has been a professor for musical dramaturgy and analysis
at the Hochschule for Music in Hamburg. Schirmer has conducted orchestras
such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bamberg Sym -
phony, the Vienna Symphony, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and the Orchestre de
la Suisse Romande.
