Thomanerchor Leipzig

About Thomanerchor Leipzig

The long and unique tradition of the Thomanerchor (St. Thomas Choir) of
Leipzig began more than 800 years ago. In 1212, a school was added to the St.
Thomas Church, where the boys were primarily trained to assume musical
responsibilities in church services. The school was also open to boys from nonaristocratic
families, making it the oldest public school in Germany as well as the country’s oldest cultural institution. The choir’s reputation is based on in part on
the many prominent musicians and composers who have directed the group,
among them Johann Sebastian Bach. Today the choir consists of 93 boys
between the ages of 9 and 18. The boys live in a dormitory (the Thomasalumnat)
and attend the St. Thomas School, a Gymnasium school with a linguistic profile
and a focus on musical education.
