About Rachel Schmidt

Rachel Schmidt, born in 1975, has been a member of the Berlin Philharmonic since 2001. At the age of six, she received her first violin lessons from her father and made her debut at twelve in her hometown of Bremen with the local Philharmonic Orchestra. She began her music studies in 1988 in the young people’s programs of the music universities in Hamburg and Lübeck. She continued her studies in Saarbrücken with Valery Klimov and later with a DAAD scholarship in Bern, Switzerland. She completed her concert examination in 2000 with Thomas Brandis at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin. She gained further musical impulses through a residence grant at the Villa Musica and in master classes with Ruggiero Ricci, Ida Haendel, and Isaac Stern. She received a prize from the German Foundation for Musical Life and a scholarship from the Study Foundation of the German People. Rachel Schmidt has participated in many radio and CD productions with, among others, the Deutsche Welle, the SR, as well as the WDR. She performs regularly as a soloist and chamber musician and is a member of the Philharmonic String Soloists, the Venus Ensemble Berlin, the Philharmonic Camerata, and Scharoun Ensemble Berlin.
