About Carin Levine

Born in the USA, the flutist Carin Levine has achieved a considerable reputation as both a performer and teacher. She studied flute with Jack Wellbaum and chamber music with Peter Kamnitzer at the University of Cincinnati before continuing her studies with Aurèle Nicolet at the Hochschule for Music in Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany.

Levine appears regularly as a soloist and chamber music performer at festivals in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. She has received numerous awards, including the Kranichstein Prize for the Interpretation of Contemporary Music. In addition, in 2010 she received the Culture Prize of the Diepholz region in Lower Saxony, and has been a musical ambassador for the Löwenherz Children’s Hospice in Syke since 2012. Levine is editor of the series, Zeitgenössische Musik für Flöte, for the Bärenreiter Verlag, which also published her book, The Techniques of Flute Playing (2 Volumes).

Carin Levine has played the first performances of more than 900 new works. She taught for many years at the music universities (Hochschulen) in Bremen, Detmold, Hamburg, and Lübeck, as well as at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for new Music. She currently teaches master classes in Germany and abroad. Since 2013, she has supervised the New Music for Flute program at the Hochschule for Music and Theater in Munich, and she has directed the project, New Music for Students, at the Hochschule for Music in Weimar since 2015.

Numerous CDs as well as radio and television recordings document Levine’s extensive repertory. Her concert performances throughout the world have taken her to the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, the Phnom Penh International Music Festival, the Ansbach Bach Festival, the Archipel Festival in Geneva, the Venice Biennale, as well as Warsaw Autumn, Musica Viva in Munich, and Wien Modern in Vienna.

Carin Levine is Artistic Director of the Lower Saxony Youth Ensemble for New Music.
