Schott Music is delighted to announce that composer Raymond Yiu’s music is now available from Schott Music.

Described as “an outstanding and distinctive voice in British music”, Yiu’s music is regularly performed and broadcast around the world by leading international artists. Born in Hong-Kong before moving to the UK in 1990, he was self-taught as a composer until 2009 when he undertook a DMus with Julian Anderson at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has since been commissioned by and written for the BBC Proms, Manchester International Festival, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, BBC Singers, Aldeburgh Festival and London Sinfonietta among many other artists and organisations.

Past highlights include performances of his Violin Concerto written for soloist Ester Yoo who presented world and national premieres with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony; The World Was Once All Miracle for baritone and orchestra which was commissioned by the International Anthony Burgess Foundation for Manchester International Festival and later shortlisted for a prestigious RPS Award; and the ensemble work Northwest Wind which won a British Composer Award. In 2021 Delphian released a critically acclaimed portrait disc of Yiu’s orchestral works.

Yiu’s music is often inflected with jazz or traditional Asian soundworlds, sometimes subtly, sometimes prominently - but always masterfully orchestrated and exquisitely written for the performers he works with. Storytelling is also a consistent theme throughout his work and the composer’s knowledge of specific social and cultural circumstances has allowed him to convey profound messages in a natural and captivating way. Yiu has written many highly successful graded exam works for the ABRSM bringing his name and music to countless international music students and he is also a Professor of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music.
