Commissioned by the Choir of Wells Cathedral and Alexander Hamilton for the installation of the Reverend Canon Toby Wright as Dean of Wells in June 2024, Lucy Walker’s Love Flows sets a text by the 13th-century German mystic Mechthild of Magdeburg, translated by Jane Hirshfield.

Reflecting the contemplative character of the text, the work unfolds through fluid, shifting harmonies and flowing melodic lines, punctuated by richly scored held chords. The spacious harmonic writing was conceived with the generous acoustic of Wells Cathedral in mind.

A delicate melodic motif, marked ‘like a bird’, emerges from the opening undulating texture before developing into a fuller statement of ‘humanity sings’. Towards the end of the piece, the motif returns in airy upper-voice solos above the choir, evoking distant birdsong.

Love Flows is suitable as an anthem or concert work for experienced choirs, particularly in resonant spaces.
