Work of the Week – Huang Ruo: The Monkey King

Portrait of composer Huang Ruo in a dark setting. He is seated on a red velvet sofa wearing a grey suit, holding a pencil and looking thoughtful. Crumpled papers lie on the floor in front of him.

The operatic world turns its gaze to California, where the highly anticipated world premiere of Huang Ruo’s The Monkey King (猴王悟空) will ignite the stage of the San Francisco Opera (SFO) on November 14, 2025. This monumental commission, with a libretto by David Henry Hwang , translates the epic tale of Sun Wukong from the beloved Chinese classical novel Journey to the West (Xī Yóu Jì) into a thrilling, multidisciplinary theatrical event.

When Asia’s Superhero Becomes an Opera Star

The sheer scale of the Monkey King’s journey—born from a stone, challenging the gods of Heaven, and eventually imprisoned for 500 years—demands a boundless musical language. Composer Huang Ruo, hailed by The New Yorker as “one of the world’s leading young composers” , provides just that with his compositional philosophy: Dimensionalism. This technique is an organic synthesis that seamlessly weaves together ancient Chinese folk music, Western avant-garde, rock, and jazz. It is the perfect sonic tapestry for an opera that blends traditional Peking opera elements, dance, and transformative puppetry alongside the Western orchestra.

The creators explicitly frame the Monkey King as the ultimate Asian superhero. The narrative reaches its powerful climax when the imprisoned Monkey, guided by Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, achieves enlightenment through the realization that “power alone is not enough”.

The Power of Dimensionalism

SFO has assembled a team of superstars: Tony Award-winning director Diane Paulus makes her SFO debut, alongside conductor Carolyn Kuan. Crucial to the visual spectacle is MacArthur Genius Basil Twist , whose visionary puppetry and set design bring the mythical universe of gods and demons to life. The title role of the rebellious hero is sung by acclaimed tenor Kang Wang.

The Monkey King is the first work by Huang Ruo—whose dynamic partnership with Schott Music/EAM began just two years ago—to be featured in our Work of the Week series. This debut marks a major milestone for the composer and publisher alike, demonstrating the immense range and global relevance of his output.
