Work of the Week – Elis Hallik: Oriri

Estonian composer Elis Hallik, with light blonde wavy hair and wearing a sleeveless black top, sits in front of a glowing, mystical forest path at night, surrounded by golden lights.

On July 20, 2025, the Estonian town of Pärnu will host the world premiere of Oriri by Elis Hallik. Commissioned for the Estonian Festival Orchestra and its artistic director Paavo Järvi, the piece is a heartfelt tribute to Arvo Pärt, who is celebrating his 90th birthday this year.

The power of a beginning

Oriri, Latin for “to rise” or “to emerge”, is more than a title – it defines the essence of Hallik’s work. In her poetic note, the composer describes a forgotten world, a stillness in time, and a gate that opens not by force, but through trust. Eventually, a radiant garden unfolds – a sonic dreamscape full of vibrant life.

A sonic journey between memory and dream

The music reflects this transformative journey, moving delicately between past and future. Hallik’s sound language is subtle and atmospheric, drawing listeners into evolving sound worlds. Her expressive style reveals emotional depth without overwhelming the senses.

A musical gift and homage to Arvo Pärt

The premiere takes place at the Pärnu Music Festival, where Oriri will be performed alongside works by Pärt and Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite. The Estonian Festival Orchestra will be conducted by Paavo Järvi at the Kontserdimaja in Pärnu.
