R. Murray Schafer, geboren 1933 in Sarnia/Kanada, ist Komponist, Schriftsteller, Hörforscher und -pädagoge.
Seine Ausbildung als Pianist und Cembalist erhielt er ab dem zwölften Lebensjahr am Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Ab 1954 studierte er Cembalo bei Greta Kraus an der University of Toronto und an gleicher Stelle Klavier bei Alberto Gierrero und Komposition bei John Weinzweig.
Schafer lehrte in den 1960er-Jahren an der Memorial University of Newfoundland und anschließend an der Simon-Fraser-Universität bei Vancouver. Anfang der 1970er-Jahre gründete er dort das World Soundscape Project.
Anfang der 1970er-Jahre gründete er an der Simon-Fraser-Universität bei Vancouver das World Soundscape Project. Seine wohl einflussreichste Publikation wurde The Turning of the World, worin er seine Lehre von der "Akustischen Ökologie" darlegt.
Im Zentrum seines umfangreichen musikalischen Œuvres stehen symphonische Werke sowie der 12-teilige Musiktheaterzyklus Patria; außerdem schrieb Schafer zahlreiche Chor- und Kammermusikwerke.
Für seine Kompositionen und Schriften erhielt Schafer zahlreiche internationale Auszeichnungen und Preise, darunter ein Stipendium der Guggenheim Foundation (1974), den Prix Honegger (1980), und den Louis Applebaum Composer's Award für sein Lebenswerk (1999).
