About Wen-Sinn Yang

“He plays technically at the highest level with a lovely, full sound and impeccable intonation. He phrases sensitively and has the fullest grasp of the philosophical dimensions of the music he plays,” remarked no less an authority than Lorin Maazel of Wen-Sinn Yang.

Since winning the first prize in the Geneva International Music Competition in 1991, the cellist Wen-Sinn Yang has been a welcome guest on the important concert stages of Europe and Asia and at international music festivals. He has performed with conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel, and Mariss Jansons. His extremely broad repertoire is documented on more than twenty CD recordings. His interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for violoncello solo will appear on a DVD from Arthaus Musik, in collaboration with Bayerisches Fernsehen. Born in Bern of Taiwanese ancestry, he studied with Claude Starck in Zurich and Wolfgang Boettcher in Berlin, later attending master classes with Janos Starker and David Geringas. For sixteen years he was the first solo cellist of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, for which he has performed frequently as a soloist. Since 2005 he has been a professor at the Musikhochschule München.
