1951-9 choirboy at the Dresden Kreuzchor, first compositional attempts
1959 compositional seminar with Karlheinz Stockhausen during the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music 
1959-62 studies of music theory and composition at the Carl Maria von Weber Musikhochschule in Dresden, taking degree ahead of schedule
1962-4 studies as a master scholar with Rudolf Wagner-Régeny at the German Academy of the Arts in Berlin
1964-8 studies of musicology at the Humboldt University in Berlin (diploma), first commissioned works
1968 freelance composer in Berlin
1973 Hanns Eisler Prize
1977 Art Prize (of the former GDR); increased activity as conductor of chamber ensembles and orchestras both at home and abroad
1978 Member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts 
1980 starts teaching master classes at the Berlin Academy
1990 member of the Academy of the Arts in (West) Berlin
1990-6 President of the German chapter of the International Society for Contemporary Music
