About Charles Gounod
Charles Gounod, französischer Komponist, Schüler von Anton Reicha, Fromental Halévy, Jean-Francois Le Sueur und Ferdinando Paer; er war zunächst als Kirchenmusiker und Chorleiter tätig. 1839 gewann er den Rom-Preis und debütierte 1851 als Opernkomponist an der Pariser Opéra mit »Sapho« und erzielte bleibenden Erfolg mit der Oper »Faust« (1859; in Deutschland als »Margarethe«). Mehr noch als dieses Werk wird in Frankreich teilweise »Roméo et Juliette« (1867; »Romeo und Julia«) geschätzt. In den letzten Lebensjahren wandte sich Gounod wieder mehr der Kirchenmusik (v.a. Oratorien, Messen) zu; er schrieb auch Orchesterwerke, Kammermusik, Klavierstücke und 196 »Mélodies« (auch Kinderlieder und Duette) auf französische, englische, italienische und spanische Texte. Berühmt blieb seine »Méditation« über das erste C-Dur-Präludium aus dem »Wohltemperierten Klavier« von Bach (1852; für Violine und Klavier; 1859 mit einem »Ave-Maria«-Text).Products
