Work of the Week – Golfam Khayam: I am not a tale to be told

Black-and-white portrait of composer and musician Golfam Khayam standing in an open landscape. She gazes into the distance thoughtfully, holding a guitar, with a scarf wrapped around her neck.

A new voice at Schott Music: With I am not a tale to be told, we introduce one of the first works by Golfam Khayam published by Schott Music. The Iranian composer is known for her unique fusion of Persian music and Western classical structures. Her piece will be performed on March 5, 6, and 7, 2025 in Lausanne and Martigny by the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne under the baton of Barbara Hannigan.

Music between East and West

Golfam Khayam’s music bridges different traditions, combining elements of Persian musical heritage with European classical forms. She sees this fusion as a means of building cultural connections: "I am interested in creating transparent bridges between East and West." More than ever, she emphasizes, these encounters hold deep meaning for her.

Ahmad Shamlou: A poem as the foundation

The title of the composition comes from a verse by Ahmad Shamlou, one of the most important Persian poets of the 20th century. His 1955 poem, which serves as the foundation of the piece, transcends time and space, addressing themes of resilience and hope. Khayam, who knew Shamlou personally, describes her connection to his work:

"I grew up with his poetry, and especially this poem awakened so many silent voices searching for light in times of darkness."

Improvisation as a musical tapestry

Musically, I am not a tale to be told is shaped by controlled improvisation. The instrumental textures create a fluid background that Khayam describes as a “Persian carpet”. Over this shifting foundation, the solo voice emerges, supported by droning bass notes, rich ornamentation, and modal harmonies from Persian musical traditions.

A powerful ending

At the climax of the piece, musical tension and emotion reach a poignant moment: While the soloist sings a natural B in Farsi, the orchestra sustains a B-flat—a subtle yet deeply expressive dissonance, embodying pain and longing:

"I am your common sorrow: cry out for me."
