A cosmic remedy for fear: On April 30, 2026, Wilfried Hiller celebrates his 85th birthday with the world premiere of The Star Seller (“Der Sternenverkäufer”) at Munich's Orff-Zentrum. Based on a story by Alexander Kostinskij, this melodrama explores the liberating power of imagination and honors a lifetime dedicated to poetic music theater.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the cleverest of them all? Based on the story by the Brothers Grimm, Carl Orff's fairytale opera Die Kluge (The Wise Girl) will be performed at the Salzburg Festival on 20 August 2024 under the musical direction of Anna Handler. 

A look at the end of time: Wilfried Hiller's new work Apocalypse will be premiered at the ION (International Organ Week Nuremberg) music festival on 2 July 2024. In addition to an instrumental ensemble, Johannes Euler as St John of Patmos, Anna-Lena Elbert as a colouratura soprano and the vocal ensemble Die Singphoniker will be performing in the vocal parts.

A modern Brothers Grimm fairy tale: On July 15th 2023, the opera Der Rattenfänger by Wilfried Hiller with a libretto by Michael Ende will celebrate its premiere at the Theater Pforzheim. Robin Davis is the conductor, and Markus Hertel the director of the new production.

Wilfried Hiller has created his poetic and imaginative music independently of the rules and constraints of the avant garde. His collaboration with the author Michael Ende has played a significant role in his compositional career. Works such as Die zerstreute Brillenschlange
(1979), Vier musikalische Fabeln (1980–1982), Der Goggolori (1982–1983) and Das Traumfresserchen (1989–1990) have become classics in the field of contemporary music theatre for children.

In 2018, Hiller once again selected one of Ende’s texts for his composition Momo, but has additionally created numerous stage works for adult audiences, chamber music compositions, solo concertos, and works for choral and orchestral forces. He received the
Bavarian Maximiliansorden für Wissenschaft und Kunst and is a member of the Bavarian Academy of the Arts. Happy birthday!
