A message of peace in times of war: On February 2, 2025, Jörg Widmann’s Cantata in tempore belli ('Cantata in times of war') will see its world premiere at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. Conducted by Kent Nagano, the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg will be joined by Ida Aldrian (mezzo-soprano), narrator Jens Harzer, and the Ukrainian Lyatoshynsky Capella. This new work stands as a powerful musical statement against war and for peace.
A Message of Universal Importance
Cantata in tempore belli incorporates Biblical texts, poems by Hölderlin, Logau, and Claudius, as well as the famous pacifist appeal "Say No!" by Wolfgang Borchert. "May this cantata bring comfort and serve as a reminder of peace," says Widmann. Created against the backdrop of current global events, the work aims to inspire reflection and hope.
Jörg Widmann's Hommage to a Genre of Great Expressiveness
The cantata as a musical form bridges oratorio and song. Widmann has explored this genre in recent years, notably with his Peace Cantata composed for the St. Thomas Boys Choir in 2023. Both works highlight music’s ability to address timeless themes like peace and humanity.
A Milestone Collaboration
This premiere marks the culmination of the artistic partnership between Kent Nagano and the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg. Beginning with Widmann’s oratorio ARCHE at the Elbphilharmonie’s opening, it now concludes with a work of profound relevance.
