Work of the Week – Johann Strauss: Die Fledermaus

On December 13, 2024, Johann Strauss’ iconic operetta Die Fledermaus  ("The Bat") returns to the stage in a new production at Teatro Lirico in Cagliari. Directed by Oscar Cecchi and conducted by Nikolas Nägele, this performance brings fresh energy to a timeless classic. At the same time, Les Musiciens du Louvre, led by Marc Minkowski, embark on a concert tour with stops in Baden-Baden, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria from December 13 to 30, 2024.

The Story Behind the Bat

The title Die Fledermaus  stems from a playful episode involving Dr. Falke and Gabriel von Eisenstein. After a costume ball where Falke was dressed as a bat, Eisenstein left him drunken and humiliated in public. Years later, Falke plots a clever revenge, weaving it into the vibrant plot of this beloved operetta.

A Tale of Intrigue and Humor

The operetta follows Gabriel von Eisenstein, who chooses a night at Prince Orlofsky’s lavish ball over reporting to jail. At the ball, Eisenstein unknowingly encounters his disguised wife Rosalinde and their witty maid Adele. Adele seizes the chance to show her acting talents, while Rosalinde outsmarts her husband with a clever scheme. The third act features Frosch, the jailer, who adds comedic flair with his humorous monologues. The operetta ends in a joyous finale, resolving all misunderstandings.

Timeless Musical Highlights

Strauss’ Die Fledermaus is renowned for its sparkling music, including Adele’s laughing song “Mein Herr Marquis,” Rosalinde’s aria “Klänge der Heimat” (Czardas), and the lively ensemble “Brüderlein und Schwesterlein.” These melodies, combined with Strauss’ signature waltzes, make the operetta a masterpiece of the Golden Operetta era.
