The title Deadly Pleasures was suggested by the content of D.M. Thomas’s dramatic poem on an imagined episode in the life of Cleopatra. Cleopatra offers any three men from her royal court a night of unbridled passion, in return for which they must forfeit their lives the next morning. Three men step forward, the last of which (unbeknownst to all) is the son she had by her brother Ptolemy, whom she gave away at birth. Unaware that Cleopatra is his mother he gives her wine laced with the drug mandragora and escapes his grisly death before daybreak.
The music of Deadly Pleasures skilfully captures the diff erent episodic moods of the text as the journey unfolds, and the three characters live out their diff erent fates.

Beschreibung
Der Titel dieses Werks stammt von D.M. Thomas' dramatischem Gedicht über eine imaginäre Episode im Leben Kleopatras. Kleopatra bietet drei beliebigen Männern ihres Hofes eine Nacht zügelloser Leidenschaft; im Gegenzug verwirken diese am nächsten Morgen ihr Leben. Drei Männer treten vor; der Dritte von ihnen ist der Sohn, den sie von ihrem Bruder Ptolemäus bekommen hat und den sie nach der Geburt weggegeben hat. Nicht wissend, dass Kleopatra seine Mutter ist, gibt er ihr mit Alraune versetzten Wein zu trinken und flieht vor Tagesanbruch.
Die grausige Geschichte bot dem Komponisten viele Möglichkeiten zur dramatischen Darstellung. Der Einsatz eines Erzählers erforderte einen episodischen Aufbau, in dem die Musik die vom Text suggerierte Atmosphäre einfängt und die verschiedenen Stimmungen widerspiegelt, während die Geschichte ihren Lauf nimmt und die drei Charaktere ihre verschiedenen Schicksale ausleben.
