Hayko Siemens studied church music with a major in organ with Hans Gebhard, Walter Kraft, Michael Schneider, and Marie-Claire Alain. He also studied conducting in Lübeck, Cologne, and Paris. Following his first church music position at the Erlöserkirche in Bad Homburg, in 1996 Siemens was named Director of Music at the St. Matthäuskirche, Munich’s largest Protestant church. He was Artistic Director of the Munich Motet Choir from 1998–2013. Siemens has performed and conducted in almost all of the European countries, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Israel, South Africa, and the Americas. His work as an organist and conductor is documented in numerous recordings and broadcasts with distinguished soloists, choirs, and ensembles. Among the highlights of his conducting career in Munich were a performance of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem on the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the premiere (on the 70th anniversary of the November pogroms) of Joram by the exiled German-Jewish composer Paul Ben-Haim – 75 years after the work’s composition. Hayko Siemens founded the Fugato Organ Festival in Bad Homburg and was the festival’s director for more than 15 years. During these years he performed a number of times a series of 15 concerts devoted to the complete organ works of Bach.
