Im vorliegenden Fall bezeichnet er eine Variationskette (a set of divisions) über einen gleichbleibenden Bass (the Ground) und die dazugehörigen Harmonien. Diese Musizierpraxis hielt sich besonders in England bis ins 18. Jahrhundert hinein.
