Description
Scènes de Ballet is an abstract work with no specified plot or stage design: the sequence of ensemble dances, pas de deux, and solos performed by two principal dancers adheres to the classical ballet divertissement form. Igor Stravinsky originally composed this ballet music for the Cole Porter Broadway show The Seven Lively Arts, knowing that only a few excerpts would actually be performed. Scènes de Ballet was composed in a Romantic style, in contrast to his ‘Russian’ ballets. Stravinsky’s music displays many unexpected solos (trumpet, horn, clarinet), alongside intermittent flashy big band sections. Among the major figures that have choreographed this ballet are Frederick Ashton, John Taras and Christopher Wheeldon.
