Description
The Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘Finland’ was written in response to a commission by the pianist Izumi Tateno who lives in Finland and Japan. Because of illness, Tateno is unable to use his right hand: after two years of rehabilitation, he returned to the stage as a left hand concert pianist. I was moved by his intensive efforts and his undying passion for music. It was a stimulating experience for me to compose this piano concerto for the left hand. The concerto consists of a slow and a fast movement based on my impressions of Finland and my Finnish friends when I was invited to the country by Avanti and the Korsholm Festival within the framework of a composer portrait.
