About Vito Žuraj

Born in the Slovenian town of Maribor in 1979, Vito Žuraj studied composition under Marko Mihevc (Ljubljana), Lothar Voigtländer (Dresden) and Wolfgang Rihm (Karlsruhe), subsequently completing a master's degree in computer music under Thomas A. Troge (Karlsruhe). In 2009/2010, he was awarded a study scholarship at the Ensemble Modern Akademie (Frankfurt), and in 2011 took part in that ensemble's Composers' Seminar, as well as the Voix Nouvelles Royaumont. From 2011 to 2013, he was a member of the scholarship programme "Akademie Musiktheater heute" (Academy for Contemporary Music Theatre), and in 2014 received a year-long artist's fellowship at the Deutsche Akademie Rom Villa Massimo, residing at the Villa Massimo in Rome. In 2012, he received the first prize at the 57th Stuttgart Composition Competition, and in 2015 was awarded the scholarship "Arnhold-Stipendium, Positano".

His works have been performed at such renowned festivals as the Salzburg Festival, the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, Berlin's Ultraschall festival, the ManiFeste in Paris, the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, the Witten New Chamber Music Days, the cresc… Biennial modern music festival in Frankfurt Rhein Main, the Gaudeamus Muziekweek and the Takefu International Music Festival in Japan. His works have been performed and commissioned by the likes of the New York Philharmonic, the BBC SSO, the RSO Stuttgart, the hr Symphony Orchestra, the DRP Saarbrücken, the Slovenian Philharmonic, the Bielefeld Theatre, the Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Vienna, Ensemble Recherche, the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin, the œnm ensemble and the RIAS Chamber Choir Berlin, and have been heard under the batons of such eminent conductors as Matthias Pintscher, Johannes Kalitzke, Sylvain Cambreling, Emilio Pomàrico, Beat Furrer, Brad Lubman and Franck Ollu.
