About Misato Mochizuki
Misato Mochizuki, born in Tokyo, is an internationally active composer. After completing her master’s degree in composition at the Tokyo University of the Arts, she received First Prize in Composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris in 1995 and took part in IRCAM’s “Composition and Computer Music” programme in 1996/97.
Mochizuki’s music combines Western tradition with Asian sensibility and is distinguished by striking rhythms, unusual timbres, and formal and stylistic freedom. Her music has been performed at international festivals in Salzburg, Venice, New York, Donaueschingen, Berlin, Witten, Cologne, Lyon, Zurich, and Toronto.
From 2011 to 2013, Mochizuki was composer-in-residence at the Festival international de musique de Besançon. Since 2007, she has taught at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo. She gives composition courses in Darmstadt, Royaumont, Paris, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, among other places, and has been a visiting professor at the Tokyo University of the Arts since 2021.
Mochizuki has also written columns on music and culture for the Japanese daily newspapers Yomiuri Shimbun (2008–2015) and Nihon Keizai Shimbun (2018).
