About Matthias Bauer

Matthias Bauer was born in 1959 in Sonneberg, Thuringia. He studied contrabass at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” until 1980. From 1980 to 1988 he lived in Lyons, France, where he developed numerous projects for experimental musical theater in collaboration with the actress and director Nina Goede. In Cologne from 1988 onward, this was followed by concerts with improvised music and music and dance projects. Since 1991 he lives in Berlin and has performed his solo program for contrabass and voice at more than sixty exhibition openings. He has also performed in numerous concerts with, among others, the Sven-Åke Johansson Quintet, Bob Rutman Steel Cello Ensemble, Ulli Gumpert Trio, SPOK, Jon Rose, Shelley Hirsch, Tony Oxley, Bill Dixon. Bauer has produced incidental music and concepts for improvising musicians and worked with the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, the Ensemble Modern Orchestra, and the Lautten Compagney. He has made a name for himself with premières of Lothar Voigtländer’s “Fou avec contrebasse”, Georg Katzer’s “Der mechanische Mensch” and of works by Helmut Zapf and Mayako Kubo. Matthias Bauer is currently the contrabassist of the New Music ensemble unitedberlin.
