About Juan Camilo Hernández Sánchez

* 1982 in Bogotá, the Colombian composer started out playing traditional music and jazz, which later led him to avant-garde music composition. His work often presents a fragmented musical situation, with sound parameters treated independently, rendering a complex mosaic. Hernández Sánchez studied composition with Jean-Luc Hervé, Philippe Leroux, Stefano Gervasoni, and Luis Naón, and he participated in composition workshops with Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer, Pierluigi Billone, and Peter Ablinger. His works were performed at music festivals in Europe and South America, by ensembles such as L‘Instant Donné, Ensemble Cairn, ABSTRAI Ensemble and the Kammerensemble Neue Musik. He also participated in multimedia projects at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and the Royaumont Abbey, and he attended the Ircam Cursus 2012.13. He received several awards for his works (Ministry of Culture Colombia 2002, MusikTriennale Cologne 2010, BBVA Foundation International Composition Competition 2012). In 2014, Hernández Sánchez is collaborating with the International Contemporary Ensemble within the ICElab programme, and with the ensemble Le Balcon.
