Huihui Cheng

About Huihui Cheng

Huihui Cheng was born in 1985 in Wu-Chang, province of Hei-Long-Jiang in northeastern China. She started to play the piano very early and wrote her first compositions at the age of nine. She took piano and composition lessons with Weiping Xie, who trained her to enter the middle school of the Central Conservatory of Music Beijing at age of fourteen, a college for musically highly gifted children, under professor Lin Zhu.
She studied composition with Guoping Jia at the Central Conservatory of Music Beijing, with Caspar Johannes Walter, Marco Stroppa and Martin Schüttler as well as Piet Mayer (electronic music) from 2010 at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart. In 2015/16 she attended the IRCAM Cursus program for composition and computer music, with Héctor Parra and Grégoire Lorieux.
She received scholarships from the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, Schloss Wiepersdorf, Künstlerhaus Schöppingen in Germany, Camargo Foundation, Royaumont Foundation in France and the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo (Casa Baldi), as attended academies of the SWR Vokalensemble and the Akademie Musiktheater heute. In 2011 she won first prize at the International Isang Yun Competition with her orchestra piece "Shining", and in 2016 she has won the Giga-Hertz Production Prize of ZKM and SWR Experimentalstudio with her piece "Me Du Ça".
