Farafina
About Farafina
The balaphone-ensemble Farafina from Burkina Faso in West Africa has been a regular guest at concert halls around the world for the last 15 years. High-profile collaboration with the Rolling Stones, the Japanese sound architect Ryuichi Sakamoto and the integrating pioneer Jon Hassell led to the group’s breakthrough and played a major part in increasing the popularity of world music in the West. But Farafina is far more than merely an internationally successful ensemble. Since its formation in 1978, Farafina has remained above all a meeting place in Bobo-Dioulasso, the capital city of the district of Dioulas: It is a kind of school at which anyone can participate in the experience of creating music together – a place where musicians, dancers and aspiring talents gather. Thus, Farafina forms an important basis for both the upholding of traditional music and the further development of contemporary music in the whole of West Africa.Products
