Description

Josephs Legende is the first ballet composition by Richard Strauss, created for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1914. Based on a libretto by Harry Graf Kessler and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, the work tells the story of the handsome goatherd Joseph in the palace of Potiphar. Having caught sight of Joseph, Potiphar’s wife attempts to seduce the young man, but is discovered by her husband. She accuses Joseph of having initiated first advances to deflect attention from her misdemeanour. Joseph is only able to avoid the torture ordered by Potiphar with the help of higher powers Strauss selected a colourful musical language for his ballet, oscillating between passages of dramatic calm and Dionysian joviality to illustrate the plot. Josephs Legende is an opulent tonal painting with which Strauss ambitiously aimed to ‘revitalise dance’.
