Description

Huw Watkins’ Flute Concerto is his second work for Adam Walker, following Capriccio for flute and piano which the two premiered in 2010. Having been awarded funding for a commission by the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, Walker approached Watkins for a second collaboration.

The resulting Concerto, cast in three movements, is built around Walker’s playing. The composer notes especially Walker’s ‘amazing sound and control of his instrument’, which he constantly had in mind during the composition process. The particular challenges of writing for flute – its shrill high register and the fact that it is easily covered by an orchestra – are deftly handled with delicate orchestration and a pallet of orchestral colours which allow the flute’s sound to come through.
