Epitaffio 2 auf Federico García Lorca

Luigi Nono dedicated three epitaphs to the poet and social critic Federico García Lorca who was killed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. These pieces are all based on his poetry, but the Epitaffio 2 contains no vocal part. Nono selected a line from Lorca’s ‘Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias’ as the subtitle of this work – ‘Y su sangre ya viene cantando’ – as a direct reference to Lorca. In this work, Nono creates a musical sketch of the poem using the solo flute and orchestral instruments, each of which is given a solo function. His Epitaffio 2 is not so much funeral music as one of the most political flute concertos in the history of music.
