Description
The conception of Huw Watkins' Double Concerto grew out of an idea viola soloist Philip Dukes had when he premiered Watkins’ Variations on a Schubert song at the Gstaad Festival in 2001. With cellist Josephine Knight in mind, he suggested writing for the combination of viola and cello. His imagination was immediately captured: 'The viola and cello seem much more closely related, and I suppose rather like in a marriage they sometimes play the same material in agreement, and sometimes they develop quite separate material independently.'
