Die Lotosblume

Hommage à Robert Schumann
for mixed choir and percussion

Description

Robert Schumann’s song Die Lotosblume taken from Heinrich Heine is one of Toshio Hosokawa’s most valued art songs. The dialogue between the lotus and the moonlight is a very emotional motif in Asian culture. Hosokawa explains: ‘In Buddhism, Buddha is sitting on a lotus flower as a symbol of the transcendental. The lotus sinks its roots into the muddy ground, grows through the water and opens up to the sky. In the moonlight, the closed bud is reminiscent of the hands of a man engrossed in his prayers.’
