Description
Written to mark the 50th birthday of his friend and mentor Oliver Knussen, Detail from the Record draws on KennethHesketh’s interest in Japanese folk legends. Part of a larger work for Japanese puppet theatre, The Record of Ancient Matters, Detail from the Record depicts the tale of a wise old poet who is sitting reading in the candle-light. Moths and dragonflies swarm to the light but ar e burnt in the bright flames. The poet is saddened by this and so to distract them, he tells them stories of ruined temples, broken promises and earth daemons.
