Description
Erich Wolfgang Korngold loosely based the composition for his cello concerto on the film music for Deception with Bette Davis, written in 1946 for Warner Bros. studios in Hollywood. The Concerto in C is an impressive example of Korngold's unmistakable tonal language: expressive melodies, rich harmonies and a highly virtuoso solo part characterize the work. Despite its delicate orchestration, the concerto places the highest demands on both the solo part and the orchestra in terms of precision and expressiveness.
Written in just one movement, the cello concerto offers a dense musical narrative that artfully combines lyrical phrases and dramatic climaxes. The romantic attitude and cinematic coloration of the music testify to Korngold's unique ability to combine classical forms with modern expressiveness.
Today, the cello concerto is one of the rediscovered treasures of his repertoire and is enthusiastically interpreted by renowned cellists on international concert stages.
