Description

One produces sound on a shô by inhaling and exhaling. The sense of time of the instrument reminds me that time is spirally circling and the floating sounds with faint changes of harmonies are as if the light is radiated from the instrument and the light and shadow are subtly crossing and moving with changes of harmonies. When I composed this new shô concerto, I was inspired by a Buddhism painting, raigo-zu. I treated sounds as the cloud and tried to depict the gradual descending of the cloud to the land from far away, growing together or away with the light (shô). Toshio Hosokawa
