Boyarina Morozova
The life and torment of Boyarina Morozova and her sister Princess Uruzova
Russian choral opera in two parts for 4 soloists, mixed choir, trumpet, timpani and percussion
4 soloists, mixed choir, trumpet, timpani and percussion
As in his ‘Russian liturgy’ The Sealed Angel, Rodion Shchedrin again uses both soloists and a small instrumental ensemble as well as a choir. This choral opera deals with highly complex religious and political themes revolving around the historical figure of Boyarina Morozova, who anchors the opera’s dramatic action.

Description
Rodion Shchedrin’s deeply moving choral opera Boyarina Morozova deals with the beginnings of the Russian Orthodox schism in the 17th century. Testimony to religious dogmatism and fanaticism, the fates of the historical protagonists are of urgent topicality. The four singers (Boyarina Morozova, her sister Princess Uruzova, Protopope Awwakum and Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich) are supported by three instrumental soloists on the trumpet, timpani and percussion. The choir takes a leading role, sometimes as narrator, sometimes as accompanist.
