Description
The combination of jazz and the possibilities of contemporary orchestral sound plays a major role in the music of Mark-Anthony Turnage. Blood on the Floor is his first work to include a significant element of improvisation, including his performers in the compositional process from the very beginning. Francis Bacon’s painting gives the work its title and the sour, desolate atmosphere of the prologue: the succeeding eight movements wind up the tension until the spiralling freefall of the last movement, Dispelling the Fears.
