Rediscovering a Forgotten Master: On January 13, 14, and 15, 2025, music lovers in Bremerhaven will have the chance to experience a special concert: the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bremerhaven, conducted by Marc Niemann, will perform Johanna Senfter’s Symphony No. 2 in D minor. This event is part of a project dedicated to reviving the work of this long-overlooked composer.

Johanna Senfter – A Composer Lost to History

Johanna Senfter (1879–1961) was an extraordinary German composer who produced over 130 works, including nine symphonies, numerous chamber pieces, and solo concertos. Despite studying under Max Reger and receiving recognition during her lifetime, her music fell into obscurity after her death, partly due to her gender. Thanks to the efforts of the Finnish Savo Music Society and Schott Music, her symphonies have been newly edited and published as modern performance material, leading to a renewed interest in her work.

Powerful Soundscapes and Emotional Depth

Senfter’s Symphony No. 2 captivates audiences with its rich orchestration and emotional intensity. The symphony follows a traditional four-movement structure, blending dramatic themes with lyrical moments. While the influence of her teacher Max Reger is apparent, Senfter’s distinctive musical voice stands out, offering a compelling listening experience that bridges tradition and individuality.
