Berlin, Torstrasse, 4:00 am: October. The temperature is pleasant. A mild breeze wafts through the night. For a moment, the traffic has disappeared from the city. For a single breath, life stands still. Before my breathing pattern emerges from its slow-motion deceleration and resumes its regular rhythm, a fox calmly strides across the road in the Torstrasse. We both stand motionless, registering each other’s presence, then he trots past and I watch him gradually disappear into a side street between the parked cars, just before everything sets itself back in motion and the broad palette of urban existence is resumed in the city.
