The Bernd Alois Zimmermann Complete Edition (BAZ-GA) is published as a hybrid edition and consists of a printed edition published in hardcover and a digital, internet-based edition. The separation into printed and digital presentation focuses on different, complementary objectives. The printed music volumes emphasize the accessible musical text and offer all the information that is relevant for musical practice as well as for scholarly interest. The digital music edition created with Edirom tools, on the other hand, focuses more strongly on the genesis and interconnection of the works and thus serves the requirements of an in-depth, particularly source-oriented research interest. The digital edition offers the edited musical text as well as annotated scans of all sources relevant to the edition and also makes it possible to filter the text-critical annotations, which are distinguished by means of a three-level category and classification model, according to editorial phenomena. The digital edition is also intended to make the interconnections between works that are characteristic of Zimmermann's œuvre visible and comprehensible from an editorial perspective.

The printed edition will be organized by genre and currently comprises eleven sections of musical works with a total of 30 volumes as well as the two sections Writings (2 volumes) and Letters (4 volumes). The musical works are arranged chronologically within the departments or volumes, provided that related works are not torn apart as a result. The BAZ-GA presents a critically examined musical text as the basis for the edition, usually of the last fully completed version of the work, in some cases also of several different versions, and will also present the existing auditory parts of some works in edited form. Different versions of a piece will be included in the edition if they differ significantly from one another and were regarded by Zimmermann as definitive at the time of the completion of the composition and may even have been performed. Working versions, on the other hand, are not edited as individual versions in the edition, but are documented in the Critical Report. If the last version of a work is incomplete or has been handed down, the last complete version is included in the printed edition. The cruxes present in some works, which cannot be resolved, are retained in the edition, but are discussed in detail in the Critical Report. Suggested solutions for the performance are part of the edition.
