Aus Italien (From Italy) is a symphonic poem in the guise of a large, four-movement symphony, which was initially planned to have five movements. Strauss composed the work at the age of 22, dedicated it to Hans von Bülow and conducted the premiere in Munich shortly after completion. As an intermediate work in Strauss' development into a perfect composer, many aspects of the reception, publication and work history have so far remained unnoticed. As part of the new edition "Richard Strauss Works · Critical Edition", all sources were examined and evaluated, provided with a critical report and published in a newly set score.
